ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team registered a season-best .418 hitting percentage in a 3-0 victory at St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday.
The Generals (18-5) completely controlled the match. W&L won the first set, 25-9, hitting .484, claimed the second, 25-11, with a .500 hitting percentage and closed out the match in the third, 25-14, hitting .306. Conversely, the Seahawks (5-16) were held to just a .077 hitting percentage in the contest.
The Blue and White totaled 42 kills with only four errors on 91 swings for the match. St. Mary's (Md.) had 24 kills on 91 attempts with 17 errors.
Junior outside hitter Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) finished with 12 kills on a .524 hitting percentage. She also had three digs and two blocks. Junior outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) had a match-high 14 kills and 14 digs. Junior outside hitter Leah Green (Longwood, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) totaled six kills, five digs and two blocks.
First-year defensive specialist Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) tallied 14 digs, and first-year setter Ashley Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) notched 30 assists, six digs and three aces. The .418 hitting percentage is the best for the Blue and White since hitting .458 in a 3-0 victory over Emory & Henry on October 3, 2018.
The Generals return to action next Saturday, when the team plays a tri-match at Virginia Wesleyan. W&L plays the Marlins at 11:00 am, and then takes on Hollins in a neutral-site match at 1:15 pm.
