ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. — Junior outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) tallied 14 kills, 11 digs and three blocks to lead the Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Southern Virginia on Saturday in a neutral-site contest at St. Mary's (Md.).
The Generals (17-5) cruised in the opening set, 25-11, but the Knights (13-8) responded in the second. W&L trailed in the stanza, 23-20, but a kill by junior outside hitter Leah Green (Longwood, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) and three straight attack errors by SVU gave the Blue and White a 24-23 edge.
The Knights fought off set point on a kill by junior middle blocker Taryn Warner, but then back-to-back kills by Green and Gould gave W&L the set, 26-24. In the third, the Generals built an early, 10-3, advantage and held on to win, 25-20.
Along with Gould's 14 kills, junior middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) totaled nine on a .381 hitting percentage. She also contributed three digs and four blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Katy Blain (West Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School) finished with six kills, four digs and three blocks.
First-year setter Ashley Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) notched 31 assists and 12 digs. First-year defensive specialist Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) totaled 18 digs. Junior outside hitter Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) recorded 13 digs and three kills.
First-year outside hitter Courtney Singleton led the Knights with 11 kills and seven digs. First-year defensive specialist Emma Steiger totaled a match-high 34 digs.
The Generals played at St. Mary's (Md.) later on Saturday.
