LEXINGTON, Va. — Sophomore middle blocker Katy Blain (West Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School) notched 10 kills and five blocks to lead the Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Averett on Wednesday at the Duchossois Tennis Center.
The Generals (16-5) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match, taking the first set, 25-13. The Cougars (10-11) quickly evened the score, claiming the second, 25-11.
The Blue and White led, 12-11, in the third, and then back-to-back kills by junior outside hitters Leah Green (Longwood, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) and Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) extended the gap to 14-11. A combination block by Blain and Borthwick pushed the lead to 15-11 en route to the team winning the stanza, 25-17.
In the fourth, the Generals scored seven of the first nine points, but Averett answered, trimming the deficit to 17-15 later in the set. W&L then put the match away with an 8-3 run, highlighted with three kills from Blain, to take the set, 25-18.
Blain had a .471 hitting percentage to register her career-best 10 kills. Gould led the squad with 13 kills and added 12 digs. Borthwick totaled eight kills and 13 digs, while Green added seven kills.
First-year setter Ashley Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) had 32 assists, 11 digs and four blocks, and first-year defensive specialist Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) contributed 17 digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Shropshire led the Cougars with 13 kills. Junior setter McKenzie Miller recorded 27 assists, 11 digs, three blocks and four kills.
The Generals next play on Saturday at St. Mary's (Md.). W&L faces Southern Virginia in a neutral-site match at 1:00 pm and the Seahawks at 3:00 pm.
