EMORY, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team held Emory & Henry to a .093 hitting percentage in a 3-0 sweep of the Wasps at Bob Johnson Court on Tuesday.
The Generals (15-5, 5-3 ODAC) led, 13-12, in the opening set, and then recorded five straight points, capped on a combination block by sophomore middle blocker Hannah O'Connor (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) and senior setter Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis), to assume an 18-12 advantage. The Wasps (4-13, 2-5 ODAC) trimmed the deficit to 20-19, but W&L won the next five points to claim the first, 25-19.
The Blue and White trailed, 6-3, in the second, but quickly gained control of the stanza (11-6) with an 8-0 run, highlighted by two kills from senior outside hitter Ashleigh Meade (Bristow, Va./Patriot).
E&H answered with a spurt of its own, tying the score, 13-13, but then five straight points for the Generals, including two kills from junior outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga), put the team back in front en route to a 25-17 set victory. W&L then closed out the match by winning the third by the exact same score of 25-17.
Meade and Gould each notched nine kills to pace W&L. Meade registered a .333 hitting percentage, while Gould had 13 digs. Junior outside hitter Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) totaled six kills, six digs and two blocks.
E&H had 30 kills with 20 errors on 108 attempts to reach its .093 hitting percentage. The Generals totaled 35 kills with 13 errors on 97 swings for a .227 hitting percentage.
Sophomore middle blocker Makayla Payne led the Wasps with seven kills on a .438 hitting percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Chelsie Crussell contributed six kills and 13 digs.
