LEXINGTON, Va. — Junior middle blockers Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) and Madeline Ferguson (San Antonio, Texas/Smithson Valley) combined for 23 kills to lead the Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Randolph on Saturday at the Duchossois Tennis Center.
The WildCats (9-8, 4-4 ODAC) led, 12-9, early in the opening set, but the Generals (14-5, 4-3 ODAC) answered with five straight points, capped on a kill by first-year outside hitter Maggie McSwain (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster), to take a 14-12 advantage.
W&L led, 16-13, a few points later, and then a 6-3 spurt, highlighted by two kills from Ferguson, gave the Blue and White a 22-16 edge. The team went on to win the stanza, 25-19, and used the momentum of the first to take the final two sets, 25-18 and 25-15.
The Generals hit .303 as a team with 42 kills on 99 swings and only 12 errors. Berry led the team with 13 kills on a .667 hitting percentage and also had a match-high six blocks. Ferguson tallied 10 kills with a .529 hitting percentage. She also added two aces.
Junior outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) notched seven kills and 14 digs. First-year defensive specialist Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) totaled a team-high 15 digs and two aces. Senior setter Mollie Ray (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) had 12 digs.
Senior setter Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) recorded 20 assists, three blocks and four digs, while first-year setter Ashley Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) totaled 12 assists, two kills and two digs.
The WildCats hit just .019 with 22 kills and 20 errors on 105 attempts. Junior outside hitter Mackenzie Ambrose led Randolph with seven kills and four digs. Sam Verhaagen had 16 digs. Senior setter Taylor Webb added 14 assists and six digs.
The Generals return to action on Tuesday at Emory & Henry at 7:00 pm.
