BRIDGEWATER, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team was held to a .110 hitting percentage, as Bridgewater pulled out a 3-0 victory on Saturday.
The Generals (12-4, 2-2 ODAC) dropped the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-23, but held an 11-5 led midway through the third. The Eagles (16-1, 4-0 ODAC) answered by winning 10 of the next 13 points to assume a 15-14 lead. W&L claimed the next point to tie the match, 15-15, but Bridgewater then went on a 7-1 run en route to winning the set, 25-19, and the match.
Junior outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) led the team with 12 kills and eight digs. First-year defensive specialist Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) notched 13 digs. Junior middle blocker Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) had 11 digs, six kills and two blocks.
Senior setter Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) totaled 25 assists and eight digs, and junior middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) added seven kills, seven digs and six blocks. She now has 274 blocks in her career, which is eighth on the W&L all-time list.
The Blue and White totaled 32 kills on 109 attempts with 20 errors to notch its .110 hitting mark. Bridgewater hit .143 with 39 kills on 133 attempts with 20 errors.
Senior outside hitter Rachel Gaston led the Eagles with 14 kills and 11 digs. Senior defensive specialist Taylor McNeely had a match-high 22 digs, and first-year setter Grace Hayes totaled 35 assists.
The Generals played Ferrum later on Saturday in a neutral-site contest at Bridgewater.
