W&L Volleyball Loses at Guilford, 3-2

Madeline Ferguson '21

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team held a 13-11 lead in the fifth set, but Guilford won five of the final six points to claim the fifth, 16-14, and the match, 3-2. The loss ended a streak of 32 straight wins for the Generals (12-3, 2-1 ODAC) over the Quakers (9-4, 3-0 ODAC) dating back to 1997.

With the score tied 8-8 in the final set, W&L took a 9-8 advantage off a kill by junior middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle). Guilford then mishandled a serve to fall behind 10-8, forcing the Quakers to call the first timeout of the set.

Out of the break, the Quakers registered back-to-back points to even the set (10-10), which led to a W&L timeout. The teams split the next two points, but then an attack error by Guilford and a combo block from junior middle blocker Madeline Ferguson (San Antonio, Texas/Smithson Valley) and senior setter Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) gave the Generals a 13-11 edge.

The Quakers called their final timeout, and responded with three straight kills to assume a 14-13 advantage. The Generals fought off the first match point with a kill by Soroka, but then a kill by senior outside hitter Christian Ritter and a service ace by junior middle blocker Khaira Bolden gave Guilford the set, 16-14, and the match, 3-2.

The Quakers won the first set, 25-21, and the Blue and White took the second, 25-22. Guilford grabbed a 2-1 advantage by winning the third, 25-20, and then W&L evened the match with a 25-19 win in the fourth.

Gould finished with 16 kills and 14 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Val Sokolow (Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) had 14 kills. Soroka totaled 40 assists, 10 digs, four aces and seven blocks. She now has 1,915 assists in her career, moving to seventh on the W&L all-time list.

Ferguson finished with six kills on a .556 hitting percentage and eight blocks. First-year defensive specialist Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) totaled a match-high and season-high 30 digs. Berry totaled four blocks moving her career total to 268, which is ninth on the W&L all-time list.

Ritter led Guilford with 14 kills and 22 digs. Senior right side hitter Jasmine Gaines had 11 kills, and senior setter Tina Eucker totaled 41 assists and 10 digs.

The General compete in a tri-match on Saturday at Bridgewater. W&L takes on the Eagles at 11:00 am and then Ferrum at 1:00 pm.
