LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team had four players with at least six kills in a 3-0 sweep of Mt. Aloysius on Saturday at the Duchossois Tennis Center.
The Generals (11-2) won 10 of the first 13 points in the opening set en route to a 25-12 victory. The Mounties (8-4) kept the second closer, with W&L leading 14-10 midway through the stanza. The Blue and White then went on a 6-1 run, capped on two aces by first-year defensive specialist Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) to grab a 20-11 advantage. The team held on to win the set, 25-17.
In the third, the Generals trailed 12-10, but then rattled off six straight points to assume a 16-12 lead. The margin never dropped below three the rest of the way, as W&L secured the stanza, 25-19.
Junior outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C. / Watauga) totaled a match-high 14 kills on a .344 hitting percentage with seven digs. Junior middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) registered eight kills on a .368 hitting percentage with four blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Val Sokolow (Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) notched seven kills and sophomore outside hitter Carson Allsteadt (New Canaan, Conn. / New Canaan) recorded six kills.
Senior setter Mollie Ray (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) led the team with 10 digs, while senior setter Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) had 31 assists, two kills and six digs. Gard chipped in six digs and four service aces.
Junior middle hitter Macy King led Mt. Aloysius with nine kills, while junior outside hitter Machala Gibbons had a match-high 17 digs and five kills.
The Generals played William Peace later on Saturday.
