LEXINGTON, Va. — Junior outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) totaled 19 kills on a .529 hitting percentage to lift the Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Shenandoah on Wednesday at the Duchossois Tennis Center.
The two teams went back and forth through the start of the first set, with the Generals (10-2, 2-0 ODAC) leading, 15-13, after 28 points. From there, Gould notched three straight kills to push W&L in front, 18-13.
A kill by the Hornets' (3-8, 0-2 ODAC) first-year outside hitter Kait Poppo brought SU to within four (18-14), but then another kill by Gould and a service ace by senior setter Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) extended the Blue and White lead to 20-14. The Generals hung on to win the set, 25-21, and then cruised in the final two stanzas, 25-15 and 25-13, to defeat Shenandoah.
W&L finished the match with a .333 team hitting percentage with 48 kills on 111 attempts with 11 errors. The Hornets were held to just a .036 hitting percentage with 22 kills on 110 swings with 18 errors.
Gould needed only 34 attempts to record her 19 kills and only had one error to register her .529 hitting percentage. She notched nine of the team's 21 kills in the second set. She also had 13 digs for the contest.
Sophomore outside hitter Val Sokolow (Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) contributed 10 kills. First-year defensive specialist Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) had 13 digs, while Soroka totaled 37 assists, three aces and six digs.
Junior outside hitter Sabrina Semo led Shenandoah with six kills, while Poppo registered a match-high 16 digs.
The Generals return to the court on Saturday, when they host Mt. Aloysius at 11:00 am and William Peace at 4:00 pm.
