FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team registered 69 kills en route to a 3-1 victory at Mary Washington on Friday as part of the UMW Classic.
The Eagles (2-4) won the opening set, 25-23, and then the teams were tied, 24-24, near the end of the second. Back-to-back kills by junior middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) and junior outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) secured the second for the Generals (8-1), 26-24.
W&L built a 10-3 advantage in the third in taking the stanza, 25-22, and then trailing 12-8 in the fourth, the Blue and White won 13 of the next 16 points, capped on a kill by Gould, to assume a 21-15 lead in the set. The team went out to close out the match in the fourth, 25-22.
The 69 kills are tied for the most by the Generals over the last 11 years. W&L also had 69 kills last year at Randolph on October 23, 2018.
Gould and sophomore outside hitter Val Sokolow (Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) each had a match-high 18 kills. Gould also added 20 digs, while Sokolow had seven. The 18 kills marked a new collegiate-high for Sokolow.
First-year defensive specialist Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) notched a season-high 27 digs, while senior setter Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) totaled a season-best 54 assists, just one off her career high.
Berry had 12 kills and four blocks, while junior middle blocker Madeline Ferguson (San Antonio, Texas/Smithson Valley) chipped in eight kills and two blocks. Senior outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) had seven kills and three blocks.
Senior outside hitter Peyton Dunow led Mary Washington with 14 kills and 11 digs, and senior defensive specialist Kendal Hall had a team-high 23 digs.
The Generals finish play at the UMW Classic on Saturday against Johns Hopkins at 11:00 am and Virginia Wesleyan at 3:00 pm.
