LEXINGTON, Va. — Junior outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) recorded a collegiate-best 25 kills to lead the Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-2 victory over Gettysburg on Friday on day one of the W&L Invitational.
The Generals (5-0) took the first two sets with ease, 25-16 and 25-16, but the Bullets (3-3) responded by winning the third, 25-23, and the fourth, 27-25, to force a fifth set.
In the final stanza, the teams were tied, 5-5, after the first 10 points, but then a service error by Gettysburg, an ace by senior setter Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) and a kill by senior outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) gave the Blue and White an 8-5 lead.
The Bullets answered with two straight points to close the gap to 8-7, but then a kill by Gould, an attack error by Gettysburg and back-to-back kills by sophomore outside hitter Val Sokolow (Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) pushed the Generals' advantage to 12-7. From there, W&L traded points with the Bullets to take the set, 15-10.
Gould registered a .377 hitting percentage on her 25 kills and added 11 digs. The 25 kills also tie for the fifth-most in a single match in program history. Junior middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) notched 15 kills on a .393 hitting percentage and added six blocks.
Sokolow had 10 kills and nine digs. Junior middle blocker Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) had four kills, five digs and five blocks.
Soroka finished the night with 44 assists, 10 digs and three blocks. She surpassed the 1,500 assist total for her career in the match and now has 1,538 in 86 career contests. First-year defensive specialist Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) totaled a match-high 18 digs in the back row.
Junior outside hitter Allie Stranick led the Bullets with 18 kills and 17 digs. First-year outside hitter Zanze Kuba-McCoy added 16 kills and nine digs. Junior setter Brooke Newell recorded 46 assists.
The Generals return to action on Saturday, when they host Meredith at 10:00 am and Southern Virginia at 5:30 pm.
