MARYVILLE, TENN. — Senior outside hitter Ashleigh Meade (Bristow, Va./Patriot) and junior outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) each notched double-digit kills to lead the Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-1 victory at Maryville on Saturday in the Generals' final match at the Maryville College Bicentennial Invitational.
The Blue and White (4-0) won each of the first two sets by two points (25-23 and 27-25), but the Scots (1-2) then claimed the third, 25-19. W&L closed out the match by taking the fourth, 25-21, to finish the weekend with four wins.
Gould led the squad with 14 kills and 12 digs. Meade ended the contest with 10 kills and six digs. Senior setter Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) tallied 30 assists and six digs.
First-year defensive specialist Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) led the back row with 12 digs and had a season-high four service aces. Junior middle blocker Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) totaled four blocks, five digs and three aces.
Senior outside hitter Brianne Sidner led Maryville with 16 kills, but committed eight errors. She also had a match-high 19 digs. Senior middle blocker Dejane Hester-Taylor contributed 10 kills.
The Generals return to action on Friday, when they host the W&L Invitational. The Blue and White will take on Gettysburg at 7:00 pm at the Duchossois Tennis Center.
