MARYVILLE, TENN. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team recorded a .374 hitting percentage on its way to a 3-0 sweep of Centre on Saturday at the Maryville College Bicentennial Invitational.
The Generals (3-0) spread the attacking around on offense with three players totaling at least 11 kills. The two squads went back and forth in the opening set, but W&L pulled out a two-point victory (27-25). From there, the Blue and White made quick work of the Colonels (0-2) over the final two stanzas (25-11 and 25-18) to close out the match.
For the contest, the Generals had 47 kills on 99 total attempts with just 10 errors to notch their .374 hitting percentage, highlighted by a .481 mark (14K, 1E, 27TA) in the second set. Conversely, Centre hit just .178 as a team with 34 kills on 107 attempts with 15 errors over the three sets.
Sophomore outside hitter Val Sokolow (Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) and junior outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) led W&L with 13 kills each. Sokolow hit .478 with nine digs, while Gould hit .407 with 10 digs. Senior outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) tallied 11 kills on a .348 clip.
First-year outside hitter Alice Rodgerson was the only Colonel with double figure kills, recording 13 to go with four digs. Junior setter Kylie Cochran had 17 assists, and senior defensive specialist Peyton Vacala notched a team-high 10 digs.
The Blue and White finish up action at the invitational later on Saturday, when the team takes on host Maryville at 2:30 pm.
