MARYVILLE, Tenn. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team totaled 57 team kills compared to just 39 for Huntingdon, as the Generals defeated the Hawks, 3-1, on Friday at the Maryville College Bicentennial Invitational.
Huntingdon (0-1) won the first set, 25-19, but the Blue and White (2-0) answered with three straight set wins (25-19, 25-15, 25-16) to claim the match.
Junior outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) led the team with 16 kills and 11 digs. Senior outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) added 10 kills and six digs. Junior middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) registered a .429 hitting percentage en route to eight kills.
Senior setter Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) notched 33 assists and 15 digs, while first-year defensive specialist Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) had 12 digs. Junior middle blocker Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) stuffed the stat sheet with four kills, two assists, three aces and three digs.
Junior middle hitter Amy Tyma led the Hawks with 12 kills and 17 digs, and junior middle hitter Addison Genard and senior outside hitter April Reese each had eight kills.
The Generals return to action on Saturday when they finish play at the invitational, taking on Centre at 10:00 am and Maryville at 2:30 pm.
