FERRUM, Va. – The No. 16 Washington and Lee women's soccer team won its ninth straight game on Wednesday night, a 3-1 victory over Ferrum on the road in ODAC play.
The win improves the Generals to 10-0-1 overall and 3-0 in the ODAC, while the Panthers fall to 7-3-1 overall and 3-1 in league play.
The Generals opened the scoring in the 21st minute when first-year forward Lindsay White (Greenville, S.C./JL Mann) found sophomore forward Emily Leding (Little Rock, Ark./Pulaski Academy) in the middle of the box for her second goal of the season. Just five minutes later, first-year midfielder Grace Wielechowski (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) played a long ball up field to first-year forward Sophia Roche' (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run), who buried a shot into the top right corner of the frame.
In the 44th minute, senior defender Laney Smith (Mountain Brook, Ala./Mountain Brook) extended the W&L lead to 3-0 with her third goal of the season, with senior forward Kelsey Anderson (Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) assisting on the play.
The Panthers tacked on their only goal of the game in the 63rd minute when junior midfielder Alex Mattson scored off an assist from junior defender Jenna Janicki.
Roche's goal in the 26th minute was her team-leading seventh of the season, as she finished the game with two shots. Wielechowski led the Generals with five shots in the game, adding her team-leading fourth assist of the season on Roche's goal. White came in next with four shots on the night, with three attempts on goal.
Mattson's goal came on her only shot of the game, while four other Panthers also shot once in the game.
W&L sophomore goalkeeper Grace Coombs (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews School) (10-0-1) made a pair of saves in 90 minutes in goal. For Ferrum, senior goalkeeper Taylor Dodson (5-1-1) stopped nine shots in 90 minutes of action.
For the game, the Generals outshot Ferrum, 17-5, including a 7-1 edge in the first half. W&L also earned eight corner kicks and allowed four to the Panthers.
W&L will return to action on Saturday for a 4:00 pm ODAC game at Sweet Briar.
