Bryce Crew

SALEM, Va. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team boasted two individual champions and eight place-winners en route to a fourth-place finish out of 13 teams at the U.S. Marine Corps Star City Tournament held at the Salem Civic Center on Sunday.

Otterbein took the team title with 137.0 points, followed by Averett in second with 127.5 points.  Elizabethtown was third (126.5), W&L was fourth (124.0) and the Apprentice School was fifth (119.0).

Leading the way for the Generals were first-years Charlie Cunningham (Pequannock, N.J. / Seton Hall Prep) and Ryan Luth (Milford, Conn. / Joseph A. Foran), who both took the title in their weight class.  Cunningham claimed the 133-pound crown, while Luth won the 157-pound bracket.

Junior 174-pounder Andrew Taylor (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster) and sophomore 149-pounder Bryce Crew (St. Mary's, Ga. / Camden County) also advanced to the championship match in their respective weight classes, before falling in the finals.  Junior Alec Horne (Chester Springs, Pa. / Downingtown East) placed third in the 174-pound bracket, while senior 125-pounder Ethan Hartman (River Edge, N.J. / River Dell Regional) and first-year 141-pounder Joseph Tarquine (Gallatin, Tenn. / Montgomery Bell Academy) both finished fourth overall.  First-year Russ Zimmerman (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) added a fifth-place showing at 133 pounds.

Cunningham posted a 3-0 record in winning the 133-pound weight class.  He began the day with a pin (6:13) of Matthew Farrar of the Apprentice School and then notched a 7-5 decision over Tristan Bean of West Virginia Tech in the semifinals.  In the title match, he recorded a 12-4 major decision over Kolin Johnson of the Apprentice School.

Luth needed four matches to gain the title at 157 pounds.  He began with a pin (3:46) of Otterbein's Michael Duzzny and then posted back-to-back technical falls to advance to the championship match.  He downed Clay Fritz of West Virginia Tech, 15-0, and then felled Kaleb Fontenot of Huntingdon, 16-0.  In the championship match, he record another pin, this time downing Kyle Bythell of Elizabethtown in 1:03.

Crew dropped an 8-5 overtime decision to Cole Cameron of Elizabethtown in the 149-pound championship bout, and Taylor was defeated 15-8 by Conner Homan of Mount Union in the title match at 174 pounds.  Both finished the day 3-1 overall.

Washington and Lee returns to action on December 1 when it travels to Ada, Ohio to take part in the Ohio Northern Invitational.  Action begins at 9:00 am.
