W&L Men's Tennis Opens Play at the ITA Southeast Regional

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's tennis team began play at the ITA Southeast Regional hosted by Mary Washington in Fredericksburg on Friday.

After the first day of competition, senior Harry Shepherd (New York, N.Y. / St. George's School) is still alive in the championship singles bracket, while Shepherd and sophomore John Rudden (Mountain Lakes, N.J. / Mountain Lakes) have advanced in the championship doubles draw.  Additionally, first-years Evan Brady (Glen Head, N.Y. / Chaminade) and Julian Hadad (Cypress, Texas / Cypress Ranch) have both advanced to the semifinals of the B2 singles draw.

Shepherd, seeded fifth in the championship singles bracket, posted wins over both George Jiang of Haverford and Joseph Cartledge of Johns Hopkins.  He downed Jiang, 6-4, 7-6 (4) and knocked off Cartledge, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4).  He will next face Marc Gomez of Stevens in the round of 16 on Saturday.

The tandem of Shepherd and Rudden posted an 8-4 victory over Bridgewater's Canon Secord and Matthew Gordon.  They will square off against the team of Harrison Hunter and Ryan Macy from Christopher Newport in the round of 16 on Saturday.

Brady advanced to the semifinals of the B2 singles draw with straight set wins over Eloi Pradier of Stevens (6-1, 6-1) and Mike Herman of Goucher (6-3, 6-1).  He will face Salisbury's Ryan Santmyer in the semis on Saturday.

Hadad moved onto the semifinals of B2 singles with a 6-3, 6-7 (7-5), 10-7 win over Robert Kresch of Haverford and a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Mason Kolls of Christopher Newport.  He will play Weiyi Zhu of Swarthmore in the semis.

Several others are still active in the consolation brackets in both singles and doubles.  Action continues on Saturday beginning at 8:00 am.
