Recke's first career goal gives W&L 1-0 win over Randolph

Erik Recke

LEXINGTON, Va. – A goal in the 15th minute from sophomore defender Erik Recke (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area) proved to be the difference in the Washington and Lee men's soccer team's 1-0 Senior Day win over Randolph on Saturday.

In the 15th minute, sophomore midfielder Harris Salom (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) found a passing lane through multiple WildCat (4-6-3, 3-4-1 ODAC) defenders. The ball came to Recke who volleyed the ball up and one-timed his shot past the keeper for the game's only goal.

Randolph's best scoring chance of the game came in the 57th minute when senior midfielder Adam Watson shot off the crossbar. W&L (7-3-1, 5-0-1 ODAC) first-year goalkeeper Michael Nyc (Kildeer, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) leaped for the ball as the rebound went right to junior midfielder Gabe Krueger of Randolph. Krueger hesitated, allowing Nyc to get back into position, and got his shot off from close range, but Nyc dove and secured the save, preserving the one-goal lead.

The Generals' offense was led by senior midfielders Dylan Ritch (Mint Hill, N.C./Independence) and Kevin Lencioni (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) who both took four shots in the contest and combined to put four attempts on goal. Salom came in next with three shots, all in the second half, and one on goal.

Recke took one shot in the game, resulting in his first collegiate goal.

The Wildcats were paced by Watson who took a pair of shots, followed by four other players who logged one shot each in the contest.

Nyc (6-1-1) earned the win and made one save as the W&L defense yielded just six shots all game to help Nyc to his first career shutout. Junior goalkeeper Erick Cortez-Martinez (4-6-3) took the loss at the WildCats' net minder after making five saves in 90 minutes of action.

For the game, the Generals held a 17-6 edge in total shots, including a 9-1 margin in the first half, as the two teams tied with two corner kicks apiece.

The Generals will be back in action when they travel to Guilford on Monday for a 7:00 pm ODAC matchup.
