Ritch helps Generals sting Randolph-Macon in double-overtime, 2-1

Dylan Ritch

LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior midfielder Dylan Ritch (Mint Hill, N.C./Independence) led the way for the Washington and Lee men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon, recording three points, including the winning penalty kick goal in the 102nd minute to lift the Generals past Randolph-Macon, 2-1.

With the score tied, 1-1, in the second overtime period, the Generals (4-3, 2-0 ODAC) went on the attack early in the frame. Just 31 seconds into the final 10 minutes of the contest, first-year midfielder George Biddle (Del Mar, Calif./Pacific Ridge) dribbled through the Yellow Jackets' (4-5, 1-3 ODAC) defense and fired a shot to the near post that was saved.

Less than a minute later, W&L earned a corner kick that was taken by Ritch. After the Yellow Jackets played the ball out of the 18-yard box, senior midfielder Will Rowson (Fairfax, Va./Robinson Secondary) saw an opening in the defense and raced towards the goal with the ball. Just after entering the goal box, Rowson was fouled and W&L was awarded a penalty kick. Ritch stepped up to take the attempt and scored his second game-winning goal of the season.

The teams needed overtime to settle the result of the game after junior defender Paul Duffy scored on a penalty kick in the 88th minute.

The Generals took an initial lead in the 51st minute when Ritch dribbled past some defenders and found an opening in the middle of the field before finding sophomore midfielder Harris Salom (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) cutting towards the goal. Salom met Ritch's pass and one-timed his shot into the top of the net for the game's first score, his second of the season.

With three points in the game, Ritch recorded his third multi-point effort of 2018 and second straight game of at least three points. His assist on Salom's 51st-minute goal puts him one assist away from tying the program's career record (22) held by Mike Mitchem '92 and Patrick Brown '89.

Ritch shot a game-high five times and put three attempts on goal to lead a group of five Generals with multiple shots in the game. In total, 11 different players combined for 19 W&L shots.

Duffy led the Yellow Jackets' offense with three shots, two on goal, while junior midfielder Anthony Astruc, sophomore defender Dylan Ogletree and sophomore defender Aaron Eiser all shot twice.

First-year goalkeeper Michael Nyc (Kildeer, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) (3-1) earned his third straight win after making a pair of saves in 101:32 of game time. Nyc now owns a 1.19 goals-against average which ranks fifth in the ODAC. Senior goalkeeper Brian Breslin (4-5) stopped eight shots in 101:32 of action for Randolph-Macon, and also had his defense step up with a defensive save in the game.

For the game, the Generals outshot the Yellow Jackets, 19-12, including a 13-7 edge after the first half. The Yellow Jackets finished with more corner kicks, however, taking seven to the Generals' five.

W&L will be back in action on Wednesday when it visits Emory & Henry for a 6:30 pm ODAC contest.
