LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior forward Lauren Paolano (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) notched two goals to lead the Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 3-0 victory over Roanoke on Saturday in the ODAC opener for both teams at the W&L Turf Field.
The Generals (4-5, 1-0 ODAC) scored the first goal of the contest off the stick of first-year forward Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./Glenelg) just 4:19 into the game. Off a penalty corner, Paolano fired a shot from the top of the circle that was blocked.
Sophomore forward Grace Weise (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin School) then sent the ball back into Muneses on the right side of the circle, and Muneses quickly redirected the ball into the left corner for her second goal this season. W&L maintained the 1-0 advantage for the rest of the half.
The Blue and White added its second goal with 9:24 left in the third quarter. Sophomore forward Stella Noels (Cambridge, Mass./Middlesex School) dribbled into the circle on the right side and then sent a pass in front of the cage to Paolano. Paolano corralled the pass and fired a shot into the right side of the goal.
Paolano registered her second goal of the contest with 1:08 remaining in the fourth period. Noels sent a long ball in from the top of the circle, and Paolano deflected it on the left post for the final tally of the contest. She now has three goals on the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) earned her fourth shutout of the season and her second straight. She made three saves in the contest. The four shutouts this year are tied for the third-most in a single-season in program history.
W&L held an 11-4 advantage in shots over the Maroons (7-4, 0-1 ODAC) and led, 6-3, in penalty corners. Senior goalkeeper Emma Clark played the full 60 minutes for Roanoke, making five saves.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday at Ferrum at 7:00 pm.
