W&L Field Hockey Upsets No. 11 Montclair State, 1-0

Stella Noels '22

MANHIEM, Pa. — Sophomore forward Stella Noels (Cambridge, Mass./Middlesex School) scored with 14:17 left in the fourth quarter to lift the Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over 11th-ranked Montclair State on Saturday in a neutral-site contest at the Spooky Nook Sports complex in Manheim, Pa.

This marks the third straight season the Blue and White have defeated a ranked opponent and the first since topping then seventh-ranked Christopher Newport, 3-2, on September 22, 2018.

The Generals (3-5) controlled the game through the first three quarters, taking 15 shots compared to just one for the Red Hawks (6-3). Despite all of the opportunities, the Blue and White could not break through until the first minute of the final frame.

W&L was awarded a penalty corner with 14:35 left in the contest, but first-year forward Kailey Fitzgerald's (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Visitation) shot was halted on a defensive save by junior defender Janell Harden. The Generals were then awarded another corner with 14:26 on the clock.

Senior defender Olivia Hewitt (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) inserted the ball to the top of the circle, where senior forward Lauren Paolano (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) controlled it. Paolano sent a pass to the left side, and Noels shot across the face of senior goalkeeper Nicole Andriani into the right corner of the goal for the tally. It marked the first collegiate goal for Noels.

For the remainder of the contest, W&L continued to maintain possession and control the game, holding on for the 1-0 upset. For the contest, the Generals took 23 shots compared to just one for Montclair State. The Blue and White also had an 8-0 advantage in penalty corners.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) notched her third career shutout, stopping the only shot she faced. The three shutouts this year are also tied for the sixth-most in a single-season in program history. Andriani made 14 saves for the Red Hawks in 60 minutes.

The Generals open ODAC play next Saturday, when they host Roanoke at 11:00 am.
