NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Christopher Newport used an early goal to produce a 1-0 victory over Washington and Lee in field hockey action on Saturday afternoon at Jennings Stadium.
The Captains (5-2) assumed the lead just 4:50 into the game when sophomore forward Mauri Ware broke away on the left side and beat W&L sophomore goalkeeper Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J. / West Essex) for a 1-0 lead.
The Generals (2-5) put two shots on goal in the opening half, but CNU senior goalkeeper Olivia Davis came up with a save both times and the Captains carried the 1-0 lead into the break.
W&L put three shots on goal in the third period, but simply couldn't find the equalizer. Amil kept the Generals within striking distance, recording three saves in the opening three minutes of the fourth quarter. The Blue & White saw its best scoring chance come at the 57:51 mark when first-year forward Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md. / Glenelg) sent a shot towards goal that was saved by CNU first-year defender Marcella Sabbagh.
For the game, the Captains held a 22-11 edge in shots and a 9-8 advantage in penalty corners. Amil finished with nine saves for W&L, while first-year forward Kailey Fitzgerald (Chevy Chase, Md. / Georgetown Visitation) added a defensive save as well.
Davis made six saves in recording the shutout for CNU.
Washington and Lee returns to action next Saturday when it takes on Montclair State at Spooky Nook in Manheim, Pa. The game begins at 2:00 pm.
