LEXINGTON, Va. — Gettysburg scored two goals over the second and third quarters to earn a 2-0 victory over the Washington and Lee field hockey team on Sunday at the W&L Turf Field.
The two squads were even through the first period, with each team taking four shots (two on goal). The Bullets (1-1) broke the scoreless drought in the second just over two minutes into the frame.
Coming off a long hit after the ball went over the end line, junior midfielder Emma Bertrando started play, dribbling toward the circle on the left side. She deked out a defender and then right as she crossed the circle, she pushed the ball toward the cage. It rolled to the right of sophomore goalkeeper Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) and ricocheted off the left post and into the back of the goal.
The Generals (0-2) took three shots over the final 12 minutes of the stanza, but could not find the equalizer. Midway through the third quarter, W&L had one of its best scoring opportunities, taking three consecutive penalty corners. The Blue and White failed to put a shot on goal during the sequence with one shot blocked and another rolling wide.
Gettysburg then stretched the lead to 2-0 with 36 seconds left in the third. A long pass sent the ball into the center of the circle, forcing Amil to come off her line. She stuffed a shot by sophomore forward Lauren Beccaria, but the rebound arrived right at the feet of senior forward Julia Soares, who quickly pushed the ball into the cage for the goal.
The Blue and White took five shots in the final frame, but could not put a tally on the board, as the Bullets secured the 2-0 win.
Amil made four saves for the Generals while seeing all 60 minutes of action. Senior goalkeeper Jillian Caputo stopped six shots and was aided by a defensive save by first-year Katie Shaffer.
W&L led in shots, 17-13, and had a 6-3 advantage in penalty corners. Senior forward Lauren Paolano (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) recorded a game-high seven shots, including four on goal, while sophomore forward Grace Weise (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin School) fired four shots with one on goal.
The Generals return to action on Saturday, when they play at Kenyon at 12:00 pm.
