LEXINGTON, Va. – Ninth-ranked and top-seeded Washington and Lee used a 12-goal run across both periods to produce an 18-4 victory over fourth-seeded Shenandoah in the semifinals of the ODAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Saturday at Watt Field.
The Generals (14-4) held a 5-3 lead with 14:49 remaining in the first half following back-to-back goals by the Hornets (12-7). However, the momentum swung quickly after that point, as W&L began its decisive run just 29 seconds later on an unassisted goal by senior attacker Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J. / Lawrenceville).
The Blue & White added three more scores before the 10-minute mark for a 9-3 lead. Castelo assisted on a man-down goal by junior midfielder Emily Carden (Charlottesville, Va. / St. Anne's-Belfield), and junior midfielder Cordelia Peters scored on a pair of free position shots just 1:12 apart.
W&L went on to score four more goals before the break, including two by junior attacker Maddy Graves (Cos Cob, Conn. / Greenwich), to assume a 13-3 lead at the half.
Peters assisted on goals by first-year midfielder Claire Fulton (Hagerstown, Md. / Saint James School) and junior attacker Rebecca Wellford (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS) to open the second half and the Generals cruised to their 12th straight victory.
W&L held a 38-13 advantage in shots and a 22-10 edge in ground balls. The Generals also forced 20 Hornet turnovers and claimed 16 of 24 draw controls.
Peters led the way with three goals and three assists, while Graves and sophomore attacker Collette Murray (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) added two goals and one assist each. First-year attacker Landon Shelley (Charlotte, N.C. / Myers Park) posted one goal and two assists, and senior attacker Mimi MacCowatt (New Vernon, N.J. / Kent Place) and sophomore midfielder Dani Murray (Denver, Colo. / Kent Denver) notched two goals apiece. Senior Hannah Wiltshire (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) and sophomore Elliot Gilbert (Bedford, N.Y. / Deerfield Academy) both played 30 minutes in goal, combining for five saves. Wiltshire started and posted one save.
Sophomore attacker Nikki Zerna led the Hornets with two goals. Junior Maddie Albornoz recorded 15 saves in goal.
