No. 3 W&L Women's Lacrosse Edged by No.16 Mary Washington, 12-11

LEXINGTON, Va. – Sixteenth-ranked Mary Washington used a three-goal run at the start of the second half to claim a 12-11 victory over the third-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team on Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Generals (0-1) took a quick 2-0 lead in the opening three minutes on unassisted goals from junior attacker Maddy Graves (Cos Cob, Conn. / Greenwich) and senior attacker Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J. / Lawrenceville). The Eagles responded with the next two goals from senior attacker Holly Hudson with 20:34 remaining to even the score.  

The teams traded goals over the next 11 minutes and the score was knotted 5-5 with 9:12 left in the first half. W&L took a 7-5 advantage with 5:46 remaining after senior attacker Mimi MacCowatt (New Vernon, N.J. / Kent Place) and first-year midfielder Kit McNiff (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) each scored on a free position shot. Mary Washington closed the half with a goal from junior attacker Hope Lockwood to pull within one (6-5).

The Eagles tied the game 3:20 into the second half on an unassisted goal by junior attacker Julia Albert. Lockwood then scored back-to-back goals assisted by Albert to give UMW a 9-7 edge with 21:55. W&L responded with goals from Castelo and MacCowatt to even the score once again (9-9) with 17:46 left.

Junior attacker Alison Davis scored a man-up goal off of an assist from Hudson with 12:12 remaining to give the Eagles a 10-9 edge. Sophomore midfielder Paige Haskins scored a minute later to give UMW a two-goal lead (12-10).

Junior midfielder Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va. / St. Catherine's) pulled the Generals within one (11-10) on a free position shot with 8:58 left. Hudson tallied the game-winning goal for the Eagles on a free position shot at the 3:33 mark. Graves scored with 2:09 left to pull the Generals within one on an unassisted man-up goal. W&L had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but could not find the back of the net, as UMW held on for the 12-11 win.

For the game, W&L had a 32-19 advantage in shots and a 15-10 edge in draw controls, while Mary Washington grabbed 14 ground balls compared to W&L's 10.

MacCowatt paced the Generals with three goals, while Graves, McNiff, Castelo and Tucker each tallied two. Tucker also won nine draw controls and caused three turnovers.

Sophomore Elliot Gilbert (Bedford, N.Y. / Deerfield Academy) played 37:44 in goal for W&L and made two saves, while senior Hannah Wiltshire (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) saw action for 22:16 and made one stop.

Hudson and Lockwood led the Eagles with three goals each. Albert recorded two goals and two assists, while junior attacker Mackenzie Maguire finished with two goals and an assist. Junior Shannon Bremer played all 60 minutes in goal for the Eagles and made nine saves.

The Generals return to action on Wednesday when they travel to St. Mary's (Md.) for a 3:00 pm contest.
