Dericks Breaks W&L Discus Record at Doc Jopson Invitational

HIGH POINT, N.C. — Junior Dash Dericks (Spring, Texas/The American School in Switzerland) broke the W&L 31-year old discus record to lead the Washington and Lee men's track and field team on Saturday. The throwers competed at the Doc Jopson Invitational hosted by Bridgewater, while the rest of the squad competed at the VertKlasse Meeting hosted by High Point University.

Dericks claimed first in the discus with a toss of 47.31m (155'2.75"). It bested the previous record of 45.98m (150'10.50") set by Jim McLaughlin in 1986 by over four feet. In the shot put, first-year Jay Roberts (Whitwell, Tenn./McCallie) had a winning throw of 13.36m (43'10.00"). First-year Andrew Creel (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) took second in the event at 12.83m (42'1.25").

Creel was also third in the hammer throw at 40.89m (134'2.00"), and senior Dan Claroni (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) placed fourth with a toss of 37.76m (123'11.00").

The 4x400m relay highlighted the Blue and White's performance at High Point. The relay finished second overall and was the top Division III relay with a time of 3:20.53. The quartet consisted of first-year Donovan Fiore (Gilbert, Ariz./Chandler Prep Academy), sophomores Carter Huffman (Sophia, N.C./South Western Randolph) and Drew Pranka (Princeton, Ill./Princeton), and senior Jack Jones (Lookout Mountain, Ga./McCallie School).

Pranka finished 12th overall and third among Division III runners in the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.84. He was also third in D III in the 110m hurdles in 15.98. In the 800m, senior Jake Roberts (Kansas City, Mo./The Barstow School) was the top Division III runner with a time of 1:58.45.

Jones led three runners in the 400m. He finished 12th overall and was the top D III runner with a time of 49.73. Huffman claimed 17th (second in D III) in 50.02, and Fiore was the fifth-best D III competitor at 51.14.   

The Generals will break for finals and next compete at the WildCat Invitational on April 15.
