W&L Men's Soccer Falls in Overtime to EMU, 2-1
LEXINGTON, Va. – Eastern Mennonite University senior forward Mitchell Leap (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) registered the game-winning goal just 50 seconds into overtime as the Royals snuck past the Washington and Lee men's soccer team, 2-1, on Tuesday afternoon at Watt Field.
The contest remained scoreless through the majority of the opening stanza, despite several scoring opportunities by both squads. However, Eastern Mennonite (4-4-1, 2-0 ODAC) took the lead in the 39th minute after it was awarded a free kick from just outside the box. Junior defender Jared Ross (Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota Christian) took the kick for the Royals, hooking it over the head of W&L senior keeper Ben Petitto (Gainesville, Fla./St. Francis) for a 1-0 advantage.
W&L (1-4-1, 0-2-1) responded in the second half, as senior midfielder Jamie Paldino (Kensington, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford) collected a rebound off EMU keeper Patrick Fox (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) to knot the game at 1-1 with 74:40 on the clock.
The Generals had several opportunities to take the lead over the final minutes of regulation, but Fox came up with a pair of saves and the other chances fell just wide of the net as the match headed into extra minutes.
It didn't take long for the Royals to score, as Leap netted the game winner just 50 seconds into the extra session. Leap collected the ball just in front of W&L first-year keeper Albert Civitarese (Bridgeville, Pa./Sewickley Academy), drawing Civitarese off his line. Leap's header then sailed over the keepers' head for the final 2-1 win for EMU.
For the contest, W&L held a significant advantage in shots, outshooting the Royals by a margin of 22-9. The Generals also owned a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Petitto and Civitarese shared time in net for W&L, with Civitarese taking the loss. Petitto played 45:00, allowing one goal and recording one save. Civitarese played the final 45:50 of the game, allowing one goal.
For EMU, Fox played the entire contest, allowing one goal while coming up with eight saves.
The Generals return to action on Saturday, as they play the final contest of their three-game homestand. W&L will face Hampden-Sydney at Watt Field, with a scheduled start time of 1:00 pm.
