SPARKS-GLENCOE, Md. – The 18th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team fell into a 5-0 first quarter hole and couldn't climb out in falling to Elizabethtown by a score of 11-7 on Tuesday evening at Tierney Field.
Turnovers plagued the Generals (8-5) early in the contest and the Blue Jays (11-3) took advantage for the early lead. Senior attackman Jason Clough gave E-Town a 1-0 lead at the 13:09 mark when he scored man-up off a feed from senior midfielder Mike Specht. Clough scored again 2:32 later off an assist from senior attackman Joe Clark, and senior midfielder Cody Larkin made it 3-0 with a goal off a feed from senior midfielder Nick Specht at 8:22.
The Elizabethtown lead swelled to 4-0 on a goal by Clark at the 6:34 mark and senior attackman Phil Kyger ended the opening rally with a goal at the 2:50 mark off a feed from Clark.
W&L finally broke through early in the second period when junior midfielder Kevin Havermann (Reston, Va. / Potomac) fed sophomore attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) on the break for a goal at the 10:02 mark. Witherell scored unassisted at 4:50 to pull the Generals within 5-2, but the Blue Jays closed the first half with goals by Mike Specht and Larkin for a 7-2 advantage at the intermission.
The Blue & White nearly drew even in the third period, possessing the ball for much of the period and out-scoring Elizabethtown 4-0 in the frame. Senior midfielder Jonathan Henry (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day) scored off an assist from sophomore attackman Sam Boxley (Roanoke, Va. / Patrick Henry) at 11:47 and Witherell followed with an unassisted goal 1:41 later to make it a 7-4 contest. First-year midfielder Thomas Zusi (Chester, N.J. / Pingry School) then scored a pair of unassisted goals in the final 8:19 of the frame to make it a 7-6 game entering the final period.
W&L just couldn't get over the hump in the fourth quarter; however, as E-Town scored a pair of early goals to go back up 9-6 just 3:24 into the period. Witherell notched another unassisted goal with 4:43 left, but the Generals simply couldn't find the goal again as the Blue Jays ended W&L's six-game winning streak.
The Generals held a 42-33 advantage in shots, 38-27 in ground balls and won 17-of-20 faceoffs. However, W&L committed 23 turnovers and was just 10-of-15 on clears.
Witherell paced the offense with four goals, while Zusi notched a pair of tallies. First-year Jack Hodgson (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's) took every faceoff, winning 17-of-20 draws. Sophomore Philip Rech (Darien, Conn. / Darien) posted 14 saves while playing all 60 minutes in goal.
Larkin and Clough led the Blue Jays, who won for the seventh straight game, with three goals each. Clark and Kyger each added two goals and one assist. First-year Tom Mahoney stopped eight shots while playing the duration in goal.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Roanoke College for a 2:00 pm contest.
