HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – The Washington and Lee men's golf team finished in 14th-place out of 42 teams at the NCAA Division III Championship held at the Mission Inn Resort.
The Generals shot a final round score of 305 (+17) on the El Campeon Course on Friday to finish with a four-round total of 300-306-306-305—1217 (+65). Wittenberg University claimed the team title with a +28 score of 298-290-299-293—1180, winning by two strokes over Guilford, who posted a score of 300-293-296-293—1182 (+30).
Josh Gibson of Hope College and Garrett Brickley of Wittenberg tied for first out of the 96 individuals that made the cut, and Gibson claimed the NCAA individual title after a one-hole playoff. Gibson posted a -1 score of 73-73-74-67—287 and Brickley shot 74-70-75-68—287.
First-year Brian Peccie (Norfolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy) was the top General in the field, tying for 42nd overall with a +16 score of 75-74-75-80—304. Junior Luke Farley (Durham, N.C. / Trinity School) tied for 46th with a +17 score of 76-79-75-75—305 and senior Conley Hurst (Little Rock, Ark. / Episcopal) tied for 50th with a 76-77-78-75—306 (+18).
Senior Todd Alan McDonald (Little Rock, Ark. / Little Rock Christian) tied for 54th and first-year Robert Quinilty (Cypress, Texas / Houston Christian) tied for 68th overall. McDonald posted a +19 score of 73-80-79-75—307 and Quinilty carded a +25 score of 78-76-78-81—313.
With the completion of the 2017 NCAA Division III Championship, W&L has now finished its 2016-17 campaign.
