GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 14th-ranked Washington and Lee men's golf team won both of its matches on Sunday to advance to the championship of the Division III Match Play Invitational held at the Grandover Resort West Course.
The Generals (2-0) were seeded second out of the eight teams competing in the event and knocked off seventh-seeded and 30th-ranked Centre in the quarterfinals by a score of 4-1. W&L then took on sixth-seeded and 28th-ranked Hampden-Sydney in the semifinals, posting a 3-2 victory.
In the win over Centre, senior Conley Hurst (Little Rock, Ark. / Episcopal) notched a 2&1 victory over Connor McCarthy. First-year Robert Quinilty (Cypress, Texas / Houston Christian) was knocked off by 22nd-ranked Carson Riley, 3&2, while classmate Brian Peccie (Norfolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy) downed Hall Rupert, 5&3. Junior Luke Farley (Durham, N.C. / Trinity School) defeated Andrew McKinney, 6&5, and junior Hayden Combs (Kennett, Mo. / Memphis University School) logged a 3&2 win over 31st-ranked Dakota Jarman.
Against Hampden-Sydney, Peccie posted a 1UP victory over Alex Simmons, while senior Todd Alan McDonald (Little Rock, Ark. / Little Rock Christian) and Combs both fell in their matches. McDonald dropped a 3&1 decision to Parker Smith and Combs succumbed to John David Gooden, 3&2. Hurst won his match over Jamie Agnew, 4&2, and Farley downed Bruce Shober, 2&1.
In individual matches, first-year Austin Harrill (Hickory, N.C. / Hickory) defeated McCarthy from Centre, 1UP, while Quinilty downed Hampden-Sydney's Aaron Persily, 4&3.
W&L will take on fourth-seeded and 19th-ranked Berry in the championship match on Monday morning at 8:00 am.
